Webinar: Concrete Detailing with IDEA StatiCa

Hosted by Bao-Lam Dao and Khaled Ghaedi with BuildingPoint Australia.

Join us for an in-depth webinar on IDEA StatiCa, focusing on the Detail app for concrete analysis. The session will explore key features of the Detail 2D and 3D applications, including workflows for modelling, reinforcement layout, and code-compliant analysis using the Compatible Stress Field Method (CSFM). We’ll also cover integration options, reporting tools, and upcoming enhancements like AS 3600 support in Detail 3D. Ideal for structural engineers working with discontinuity regions, anchorage, and advanced concrete design.

BuildingPoint IDEA StatiCa Webinar – September, 2025

Transcript:

Overview of IDEA StatiCa Applications

Bao-Lam provided an overview of the IDEA StatiCa suite, highlighting the steel, concrete, and BIM modules, and explained the focus of the session on the Detail app, with Khaled supporting the technical discussion.

  • Overview of IDEA StatiCa Applications: Bao-Lam provided an overview of the IDEA StatiCa suite, highlighting the steel, concrete, and BIM modules, and explained the focus of the session on the Detail app, with Khaled supporting the technical discussion.
  • Steel Module Features: Bao-Lam described the steel module, which includes the Connection app for analysing steel-to-steel joints and base plates, the Member app for stability-sensitive members, and the Connection Library, a cloud-based tool with over a million templates.
  • Concrete Module Features: Bao-Lam outlined the concrete module, which comprises Detail for analysis of discontinuity regions and anchorage design (in both 2D and 3D), RCS for reinforced and prestressed cross-sections, Beam for beam analysis and design, and a Member module for advanced analysis of concrete members.
  • BIM Module and Integration: Bao-Lam explained the BIM module, which includes CHECKBOT for linking IDEA StatiCa with over 40 other software applications, and a free Viewer app for reviewing and sharing IDEA StatiCa files.
  • Session Focus and Learning Resources: Bao-Lam clarified that the session would focus on the Detail app, particularly Detail 2D, and mentioned that further resources and materials are available on the IDEA StatiCa website for those interested in other modules.

Detail 2D Application: Features and Workflow

Khaled presented an in-depth walkthrough of the Detail 2D application, demonstrating its capabilities for geometry setup, reinforcement layout, code compliance, and analysis workflows, with Bao-Lam introducing and supporting the session.

  • Geometry and Material Setup: Khaled demonstrated how users can create or import geometry using inbuilt templates or DXF files, and select from various concrete material types, including conventional reinforced concrete, post-tensioned, precast, and composite sections.
  • Code Compliance and Material Database: Khaled explained that Detail 2D is compliant with AS 3600, with the material database and calculation procedures adjusted to suit the code, including dynamic factors and refined stress-strain diagrams for both serviceability and strength checks.
  • Analysis Methods and CSFM: Khaled discussed the limitations of traditional methods like the strut-and-tie approach and highlighted the use of the Compatible Stress Field Method (CSFM), which combines strut-and-tie with advanced finite element modelling to provide accurate, code-compliant results for both ULS and SLS, including nonlinearities.
  • Workflow Demonstration: Khaled provided a step-by-step demonstration: importing geometry, defining supports and loads, setting up load combinations, adding reinforcement (either from templates or DXF), and running analysis to review results such as stress, strain, crack width, and deformation.
  • Reporting and Output: Khaled showed how users can generate detailed, customisable reports including graphical and tabulated results, bar bending schedules, and theoretical background, which can be exported for documentation purposes.

Detail 3D Application: Capabilities and Use Cases:

Khaled introduced the Detail 3D application, explaining its use for out-of-plane bending and anchor design, and demonstrated its workflow and analysis features, noting current code support and future updates.

  • Purpose and Anchor Design: Khaled explained that Detail 3D is designed for complex discontinuities and complete anchor design, addressing limitations in the Connection app by allowing reinforcement in the concrete block and supporting supplementary reinforcement as permitted by code.
  • CSFM in Three Dimensions: Khaled described the use of the Compatible Stress Field Method in 3D, incorporating advanced modelling techniques such as Mohr-Coulomb and Mohr’s Circle theory, with validation against finite element solutions and experimental tests.
  • Workflow and Analysis: Khaled demonstrated the workflow: selecting templates, editing geometry, defining supports and load transfer devices, adding anchors and reinforcement, setting load combinations, and running analysis to review 3D stress, strain, and deformation results.
  • Reporting and Export Options: Khaled showed that reports can be customised and exported to PDF or Word, and can be sent directly to a physical printer, providing comprehensive documentation of the analysis.
  • Code Support and Future Updates: Khaled and Bao-Lam noted that AS 3600 compliance for Detail 3D is not yet available but is planned for a future release, with current support for Eurocode and American codes.

Upcoming Events and Support Resources

Bao-Lam announced the upcoming IDEA StatiCa 25.1 roadshow, available support resources, and special offers for new users, encouraging participants to engage with the community and access further training.

  • Roadshow and New Features: Bao-Lam detailed the upcoming in-person roadshow sessions in major Australian cities, which will cover new features in version 25.1, including AS 3600 compliance in Detail 3D and ETABS workflows.
  • Support and Training Resources: Bao-Lam highlighted the availability of a 14-day free trial of IDEA StatiCa, a self-paced online campus course, and the support centre with tutorials, knowledge base articles, and verification examples.
  • Licensing and Case Studies: Bao-Lam mentioned special offers for sole traders and early-stage firms, upgrade options for existing steel licence holders, and an invitation for users to submit project case studies for potential feature and marketing.
