iModel Steel Detailing Completes Tihi Boardwalk Project Using Tekla BIM

iModel Steel Detailing is proud to have completed the detailing of the Tihi Boardwalk project, a new boardwalk and view deck around the crater and summit of Mt. Eden in Auckland, New Zealand. The project is a significant one, as it is located on a sacred, historical, and cultural heritage site that is visited by over 1.2 million people each year.

The boardwalk is sensitively designed to blend with the landscape and minimise its environmental impact. The alignment follows the contour of the crater rim, winding through the terraces. The materials used are permeable to the elements, allowing grass growth and ground stability beneath. The boardwalk also has a low profile to avoid dominating the landscape.

The project presented a number of challenges, including:

  • The sloping condition of the mountain, which required over 10 revisions to the boardwalk alignment on each identified area of slope conflict.
  • The COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, which restricted movement and made it difficult to obtain site measurements.
  • The changing RLs of the piles and structures, which had to be followed in the modeling process.
  • The intricate design requirements due to the nature of the site.
  • The tight timeframe.

iModel Steel Detailing was able to overcome these challenges by utilising Tekla BIM software. Tekla BIM made it possible to easily manage the multiple revisions, model the steelworks on the sloping terrain, and collaborate with the project team while working from home during the lockdown.

The Tihi Boardwalk project is a testament to iModel Steel Detailing’s expertise in Tekla BIM and its commitment to delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget. The company is proud to have contributed to the preservation of this important cultural heritage site for future generations.
